Writing Workshop: My Scandalous Week Alone

Assignment: Your day, hour by hour.

Submission: Last week, after leaving the girls with my brother and sister-in-law, I drove home and spent the week alone which hasn’t happened since 2010 and back then somebody died.

Most of my week was pretty much the same as it would have been had someone besides me been home. The real excitement happened after hours. {yawn/stretch} I love stay-vacations. This is how Tuesday, June 10, 2014 looked for me:

  • 7-8 a.m. pushed Snooze button three times, got up, let cat in and dog out, showered, dressed, fed cat, watered dog
  • 8-9 a.m. did hair and makeup, dog/cat-proofed all consumables, show up 10 minutes late to work (still first to arrive @ 8:25), answered email, stalked Facebook, wondered how and when I’ll get breakfast (never got any)
  • 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. working- head down, nose to the grindstone. No time for chit chat, surfing the ‘net, texting with the bff, or social networking. You know, except for when there is time.
  • 12:30-1 p.m. lunch! waited on train, deposited paycheck (oh, happy day), picked up Subway, waited on train, stopped by house to let dog in and cat out, tried on three Creative Chaos blouses, scurried back to work with only two(!), wrote Adriana a check
  • 1-5:30 p.m. ditto on the working thing again. I ate ½ my Subway at the desk- that Italian Herbs and Cheese bread is really whifferific. Carp! I left my phone charging in the pickup- no texting this afternoon
  • 5:30-6 p.m. home, changed into more comfortable clothes, exchanged dog and cat again, briefly considered laundry and weeding flowerbeds
  • 6-9 p.m. decided to skip chores and sat down in front of tv, ate other ½ of Subway while watching Matthew McConaughey in Mud which was really good and Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson in Pain & Gain which was pointless and unnecessarily violent and I turned it off half-way through
  • 9-11-ish p.m. watched the first two three episodes of Scandal. Y’all were so right about this show!

And that was it. Wednesday through Friday were pretty much the same with some slight variations on the 7-11 p.m. time slot: Monday night I watched three movies and fielded three ‘are you home?’ telephone conversations; Wednesday night I had planned to deliver garage sale items to the church, thereby cleaning out at least of third of the ‘treasure’ taking up room in our rented storage, but Jack took the storage keys with him so I stayed home and watched more Scandal; Thursday I took some groceries to Grandma Alma who has developed ulcers from her Sonic Wacky Pack diet and then I came home watched, yep, you guessed it- more Scandal; Friday was a much-needed Girls Night In with bff Michelle. We didn’t watch any Scandal, but we sure solved some problems a la Olivia Pope!

You can probably see how Saturday and Sunday fell out even though I had every intention of cleaning my house and spending some more time with Grandma Alma. Netflix: best and worst $10.00 I spend every month!

  1. Practical commentary – I am thankful for the analysis – Does anyone know where my company might be able to locate a blank DS-230 form to use ?
